Richmond Public Schools

The district serves approximately 24,000 students who reside in the Richmond metropolitan area, representing the region’s diverse socioeconomic mix. Richmond Public Schools is comprised of 26 elementary schools (1 exceptional education alternative and 1 exceptional education program within a school); 8 middle schools; 5 comprehensive high schools; 3 specialty high schools (Franklin Military, Open and Richmond Community); 2 schools serving students with exceptional needs (Amelia Street and Preschool Development Center); 2 programs for students with exceptional needs (REAL located at Henderson MS and Thirteen Acres located at Clark Springs ES); and 3 career and technical education, and alternative education schools and programs Richmond Alternative School (RAS), the Richmond Technical Center (RTC), and the Richmond Career Education & Employment Academy (RCEEA).

Elementary Schools

There are 26 elementary schools located throughout the city. The schools offer the standard curriculum based on the Virginia State guidelines and SOLs. Additionally, the schools offer programs such as gifted and talented, foreign language and exceptional education. Many of the RPS elementary schools operate as model elementary schools with themes including Bellevue's visual and performing arts theme and Swansboro with the creative writing theme.

Middle Schools

The 8 middle schools and 1 new middle school program hosted within Franklin Military School are all located within Richmond City limits. Middle Schools provide all students with the standard curriculum based on the Virginia State guidelines and SOLs. The middle schools also offer accelerated courses leading towards highs school credits and acceptances toward high school international baccalaureate or governor’s school programs.

High Schools

The high school level is comprised of 5 comprehensive and 3 specialty schools. The comprehensive schools provide learning opportunities based on the Virginia State guidelines and SOLs, resulting in the ultimate goal of a high school diploma. RPS awards diplomas from advanced to standard diplomas. The high schools participate in Virginia High School League, VHSL, for sports (basketball, football, track, tennis, etc).
