Title I Programs
Title I is the largest federally funded program developed to provide additional educational services to help disadvantaged students meet state academic standards. Title I schools implement schoolwide or targeted assistance programs to ensure academic success for eligible students. Title I funds may be used for a variety of services and activities, primarily to supplement instruction in reading and mathematics.
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
If a school meets annual state achievement goals for all students and for every subgroup of students, it has made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). A school goes into school improvement when AYP goals are not met for two consecutive years in the same subject. These schools must meet certain requirements to exit improvement.
Parental Involvement
Title I schools encourage partnerships with parents to support student achievement. Title I schools offer a variety of activities to assist parents that include orientation meetings, workshops, family nights and recognition programs. Additionally, parents in schools that are in improvement may be eligible to request school choice and supplemental educational services (SES) or free tutoring.
School Choice
Parents may request to transfer their child to a higher achieving school when their child's school is in school improvement. In some cases, free turoing is available in stead of the choice transfer.
Supplemental Educational Services
The supplemental educational services (SES) program provides free tutoring to eligible students in a school that is in two or more years of school improvement. Some schools are eligible to participants in the SES Reversal program and receive SES in year 1. Supplemental Education applications are available on the website for participating schools.
