The Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is offered for levels I-III (grades6-8) at Lucille M. Brown Middle School,and levels IV and
V (grades 9 and 10) are offered at Thomas Jefferson High School. The MYP is designed to meet the educational needs of students aged 11-16.
The MYP aims to develop in students:
- the disposition and capacity to be lifelong learners
- the capacity to adapt to a rapidly changing reality
- problem-solving and practical skills and intellectual rigor
- the self-confidence to act individually and collaboratively
- an awareness of global issues and the willingness to act responsibly
- the ability to engage in effective communication across frontiers
- respect for others and an appreciation of similarities and differences. (1)
The MYP is centered around the concepts of Holistic Learning, Intercultural Awareness, and Communication.
IB-MYP students are expected to go beyond minimum expectations, to be engaged and curious, and to ask thoughtful questions. Students are expected to develop strong organizational skills and to grow increasingly more responsible and independent in their academics during their enrollment in the MYP. Students are also expected to be engaged in their community and to give back to the community as part of their involvement with the MYP. Level I students are expected to complete and document 20 hours of service to the community. Level II students are expected to serve 25 hours. For students in Levels III-V, 30 hours of service is required each year.
